What is health and safety in a workplace?
The Health and Safety At Work Act 1974 – requires your employer to provide you with information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work of their employers
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 – identifies situations where health and safety training is particularly important e.g. starting work, exposure to new or increased risks or where skills are rusty or need updating. This includes assessing risks to you while you are at work and to any other people affected by this.

- Is an enabling act that enables other health and safety regulations to be made
- Established the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) to propose new regulations
- Established the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to enforce the law using inspectors

- Aims to protect all persons on the premises – not just employees
- Emphasises the prevention of accidents by anticipating hazards and reducing risks..
- There will be identified hazards and the procedures to be followed in relation to those hazards
