The term ‘Paediatric’ relates to children and infants.

An Infant is defined as being from the age of 0-1. A child is defined as being from the age of 1 to the onset of puberty. Puberty can be very difficult to recognise in many children. Children of the same age will vary in size and appearance.

Common sense must prevail. If your casualty appears to be that of a child and has not reached puberty, then you must treat them as a child. If you are in doubt, you should adopt the adult protocol. The important thing to remember is that you must offer your casualty some form of initial treatment. Little harm will come to them if you happen to identify the age of the child incorrectly.
